DESCRIPTION:Professional Liability Program Course Description (Category 1 Core Course) – VIRTUAL \nCourse Title: PLP: What all dentists should know\nCourse Duration: 2 hours\nCourse Description: Professionalism and ethical practice is a core value for all healthcare practitioners including dentists. \nThis course\, offered by the Professional Liability Program (PLP) of the RCDSO\, probes the\nquestion of why some patients sue their dentist\, and offers some suggestions to prevent a claim. Embedded in the presentation are closed PLP cases which provide illustration and context. \nLearning Objectives\nAt the end of the session participants will have learned:\n• the role of PLP;\n• details of PLP malpractice protection;\n• tips to avoid lawsuits;\n• the importance of good record-keeping; and\n• the importance of patient centred care. \nCourse Presenters\nThis course will be presented by PLP staff in person or virtually. \nSpeaker: Dr. Peter Hong\nDr. Hong received his DDS from the University of Toronto\, with honours\, in 1983. \nAfter graduation\, he worked in public health\, and started a general practice in mid-\ntown Toronto\, which he owned and operated for over 35 years. He also worked at \nSunnybrook Hospital as a staff dentist in geriatrics for over 30 years. He has been\nan instructor at U of T for over 35 years\, and currently teaches the\nCommunications course\, and the Ethics and Professionalism course to\nundergraduate dental students.\nDr. Hong began working for the College on a part-time basis in 2001 as a\nMonitoring Officer\, joined the Professional Liability Program as a Senior Dental\nConsultant in 2016 and became the Assistant Manager – Dental in 2019.
